DJANGO AND POSTGRESQL — WHEN PYTHON IS THE RIGHT ANSWER

Most of what BCH builds is PHP. Most of what Kenyan clients hire developers to build is PHP or JavaScript. But there is a serious case for Python and Django, and knowing when to reach for it is part of being a developer who can choose the right tool for the job.

Django is a web framework for Python. Its design philosophy is batteries included — it ships with almost everything a web application needs: a database ORM, a built-in admin panel, authentication, form handling, URL routing, and a templating engine. Laravel developers will find this familiar — same philosophy, different language. Instagram, Pinterest, and Mozilla run on Django in production. It is not a toy.

PostgreSQL is a relational database in the same category as MySQL. It stores data in tables with rows and columns and uses SQL for queries. PostgreSQL handles complex queries better than MySQL, supports JSON data natively in a powerful way, has stronger support for full-text search, and enforces data standards more strictly. For most small projects MySQL and PostgreSQL are interchangeable. PostgreSQL becomes the clear choice when data complexity grows — complex reporting, geographic data, or applications where data integrity is critical. Django and PostgreSQL are used together so commonly they are almost one recommendation.

When Python and Django is the right answer:

Data-heavy applications. NGOs collecting and analysing survey data. Research institutions processing large datasets. Health systems running statistical reports. If the application is primarily about collecting, processing, and reporting on data rather than transactional business logic, Python’s data ecosystem — pandas, numpy, matplotlib, all available alongside Django — is significantly stronger than PHP’s.

Machine learning and AI integration. If you are building a system that needs to run a model — a prediction engine, a recommendation system, a document classifier — the model is almost certainly in Python. Integrating it into a Django backend is natural. Integrating it into PHP is more complicated.

Academic and research projects. Computer science final year projects, data science theses, postgraduate research tools — if your project involves natural language processing, computer vision, or any machine learning component, Python is the language your supervisors and your literature will point you toward.

International development and NGO work. USAID, WHO-affiliated programmes, and many international NGOs standardise on Python in their technical stacks. If you are interested in that sector, Python fluency is an asset.

The honest limitation: if you are building websites and business systems for local Kenyan clients — Nakuru SMEs, law firms, community organisations — Django will not serve you better than Laravel for most of that work. The local PHP developer community is larger, shared hosting runs PHP not Python, and finding collaborators for a PHP project is easier.

Learn PHP as your primary production stack. Learn Python and Django when your work moves toward data, AI, academic projects, or international development. The fundamentals transfer across both.
