Introduction to Prompt Engineering

Overview

An engaging, hands-on developer learning session that brought together approximately 35 participants to explore the Command Line Interface (CLI), Git and Version Control, Prompt Engineering, and Google Gemini. The session combined guided demonstrations with practical exercises to help participants strengthen their development workflows, collaborate effectively, and use AI tools more productively. The event was organized through the ongoing developer learning initiative by Bonnie Computer Hub in collaboration with GDG Kabarak University.

About This Event

Introduction to Prompt Engineering was a practical developer learning session held on 9 October 2026 at Kabarak University. The event brought together approximately 35 participants for a hands-on learning experience covering essential developer tools, collaboration workflows, and AI-powered productivity. Led by Onduso Bonface, CEO & Founder of Bonnie Computer Hub, the session combined demonstrations, guided exercises, and collaborative problem-solving. Topics Covered: 1. The Command Line Interface (CLI) Participants explored the command line and practised creating a Git practice directory and a README file. 2. Git and Version Control: Participants learned about version control and collaboration workflows, including a practical exercise on identifying and resolving Git merge conflicts. 3. Introduction to Prompt Engineering: Participants explored how to write clearer, more effective prompts and improve the quality and usefulness of AI-generated responses through a practical prompt-rewriting exercise. 4. Google Gemini Basics: - Participants were introduced to Gemini and explored practical ways to interact with AI, including creating and using a Gem. Learning Approach: - The session emphasized practical participation rather than theory alone. Learners worked through hands-on exercises, explored real-world development scenarios, and discussed how these skills can support their learning and future software development projects. Collaboration: - The session formed part of the ongoing developer learning initiative by Bonnie Computer Hub in collaboration with GDG Kabarak University, aimed at equipping learners with practical technology skills and preparing them for modern development workflows.

Impact & Outcomes

The session successfully engaged approximately 35 participants in practical developer learning, creating an opportunity to strengthen technical skills, collaboration, and AI literacy. Participants gained practical exposure to command-line workflows, Git version control and merge conflict resolution, effective prompt writing, and Google Gemini. The hands-on format encouraged active participation and helped learners connect the concepts covered to real development scenarios. The event also strengthened the ongoing collaboration between Bonnie Computer Hub and GDG Kabarak University in supporting developer education and community learning. The next phase will focus on applying the skills learned through practical exercises and continued engagement with the developer community.
